Life at Edenwald: Kitty Allen Reflects on What “Never Gets Old”
At Edenwald, we recently unveiled a new tagline that perfectly captures the spirit of our community, “This never gets old.” It reflects the daily joy, continuous learning, and vibrant way of life for which we’ve come to be known. No one understands this better than Kitty Allen, a resident who recently shared her thoughts on what “never gets old” about life at Edenwald. Her responses paint a beautiful picture of the warm, engaging community that makes every day here remarkable.
Seven Things That Never Get Old at Edenwald
“It never gets old,” Kitty begins when describing the warmth of the community. “Whenever you meet a resident who has just moved in who is happily amazed at how quickly the Edenwald front desk and other staff call them by name. It’s just one example of how friendliness is a hallmark of our community.”
How the arts play a special role in community life: “Our community receives so much joy from the Peabody Conservatory’s Musician-in-Residence program. Peabody’s musicians contribute to our inspirational monthly community concerts, and a variety of collaborating conservatory artists perform. The MIR brightens the lives of our healthcare residents, offering appropriate interactive activities and programs in music each week.”
The endless opportunities to engage: “A wide variety of programs and activities are creatively planned and led by our residents—inviting engaging speakers, playing games, cards, Scrabble, Mahjong, bingo, dressing up for Halloween and New Year’s Eve parties, learning more about Shakespeare or operas, participating in discussion groups, book club, flower arranging. We also love watching a movie on Saturday night, Sunday night, and an occasional foreign film.”
Or our plethora of interests to pursue at your own pace: “We have a wealth of ways to enjoy life, even by yourself if you so choose—in our library, with books, large print and regular (we add a dozen new selections each month), borrowing an audiobook from that special collection, doing jigsaw puzzles, on the walking track, in an exercise class, at the pool area (both swimming and billiards), knitting, art studio, and woodshop.”
Next, our dedication to well-being: “How blessed we are that many of our health and wellness needs are located right here in the building—an audiologist, podiatrist, dentist, in addition to our Gilchrist medical team and wellness director. Some of us no longer drive, so access to convenient medical care is greatly appreciated in addition to the benefits of improved health.”
Perhaps most importantly, Kitty emphasizes the opportunities for meaningful contribution: “There are so many opportunities to volunteer and become involved, primarily as a worker in Nifty Thrifty—our donation-supported bargain shopping venue. The sales proceeds help pay for many Residents’ Association-sponsored activities and programs. The Residents’ Association currently sponsors more than 30 committees, activities, and services. The list expands as interest in new areas is made known.”
A Community That Keeps Growing
Kitty’s experiences highlight what makes Edenwald such a genuinely enriching place to live—and make the future all the more exciting. Our plan to build 127 spacious new residences on the campus of next-door neighbor Goucher College is more than a physical expansion—it’s an expansion of opportunities for connection, growth, discovery, and purpose that, as Kitty can attest, never get old.
